J'ouvert with the Dutty Crew

While the carnival related events start as early as March, the official kick-off to the Bahamas Carnival weekend starts on Thursday with the only J'ouvert in town. Brought to you by the Dutty Crew. This year the Dutty Crew is celebrating their 5th year, so they are gearing up for the best J'ouvert yet!

J'ouvert, which means "dawn" or "day break" is a carnival celebration originating from Trinidad and Tobago. It typically takes place at dawn. J'ouvert, much like many of the carnival celebrations, can be traced back to acts of resistance prior to the emancipation of enslaved folks and a celebration of culture after emancipation. Today, J'ouvert is celebration during many Caribbean carnivals and around the world amongst the Caribbean diaspora.

In The Bahamas, the Dutty Crew has brought to life this amazing celebration by bringing the only moving J'ouvert to the downtown streets of Nassau. This year will be no different, as they bring to you DUTTY TIME MACHINE - a celebration of the eras. The event takes pace every Carnival Thursday, this year it will be on June 5th! Don't forget that this year Friday is a holiday, so no excuse to miss it!
